This was a free Kindle book and I enjoyed it quite a bit. It wasn't riveting, like the page-turners I usually read, but it was a truly enjoyable piece of American literature from the Victorian period. Green is a darn good writer and vaguely reminds me of Wilkie Collins. I enjoyed her refined use of the language, and such quaint phrases as "quoth he." She wove an interesting plot in this mystery and threw in some good romantic elements, adding the right amount of rising suspense at the end. I read a lot of intense books and I like to read something light--but still good--in between, and I'll be sure to pick up more of Anna Katherine Green.Product details

Lengthy descriptions that don't move the plot. I skipped many pages when I got about 2/3 through the book. Depressing.
I loved to hate Hiram Huckins! Once again I have not been disappointed with the writings of Miss Green and look forward to reading others of her books.
